AUGUSTA, Ga. - The 28th annual Augusta Futurity ended Saturday, Jan. 27, in the James Brown Arena with PHIL RAPP of Weatherford, Texas, winning the 4-Year-Old Futurity Open championship and his eighth Augusta title riding MY GUY REY to a score of 220 and earning $24,901.

In the same night, WESLEY GALYEAN of Ardmore, Okla., captured the 4-Year-Old Futurity Non-Pro championship riding MISSING ADDITION to a score of 220 and earning $19,127.

The largest cutting horse event east of the Mississippi offered a total purse of $926,241 with contestants coming from 27 states and Canada. The largest number of the 665 entries from a single state was 218 coming from Texas.

"The show ran flawlessly," said Show Manager Pete May. "We couldn't have had a better show. We had good weather and good cattle. We're also now having champions who are the children of the original cutters we had when we started this show 28 years ago. We have a whole new group of cutters coming, and that's healthy for the game."

May added, "Our numbers were somewhat down this year, which I think was because we changed our schedule to appeal to all trainers. It actually hurt the mid-range trainers, causing them to stay a day or two longer. So we're going back to our original schedule next year.

"We've got a team who puts on this show who knows what they're doing," May concluded, "and the team that knows what they're doing gets the job done, and our job is to entertain our customers."

During the 10-day show (Jan. 18-27), Augusta Futurity champions were crowned in nine main categories plus two events held in the same venue: the Area 18 Youth Scholarships competition featuring contestants from Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, and also the coveted Western Horseman Cup championships sponsored by Cowboy Publishing Group's Western Horseman magazine and UBS in conjunction with NCHA-approved aged events.
