The all-time champion in Augusta Futurity history added to his prestige in 2002.
Phil Rapp, owner of six Augusta titles, finally won the big one, scoring 223 on Dulces Smart Lena to capture his Futurity Open championship.
"I've been so fortunate here," Rapp said. "It's really special to come back here as an Open trainer and to win the crown jewel of the Augusta Futurity. The Classic is a great deal and so is the Non-Pro, but the jewel really is the 4-Year-Old Open."
Rapp, of Weatherford, Texas, added his seventh title to a string of earlier victories: 1991 Futurity Non-Pro, 1994 Futurity Non-Pro, 1998 Classic Non-Pro, 1998 Classic Open, 1999 Classic Non-Pro, 2000 Futurity Non-Pro.
With his win in 2002, Rapp kept his household's yearly winning streak intact. Either Phil or his wife, Mary Ann, have won a title in Augusta every year since 1998. On CD Light, Mary Ann Rapp won the 2001 Futurity Non-Pro.
"This is a great place to show and we always try to get ready to show here and do well," Phil Rapp said.
Faron Hightower, Pete Branch and Terry Riddle are all tied for second in career wins in Augusta Futurity history with four titles. Hightower jumped into the tie two years ago, winning the Futurity Open and Classic Open titles in 2001.
Lloyd Cox, Kobie Wood, H.B. Bartlett, Buster Welch, Tommy Manion and Ronnie Rice have each won three Augusta championships. Cox and Bartlett have made the biggest moves in the past few years. Cox won the 1999 and 2000 Classic Open and the 2000 Futurity Open, while Bartlett won the 1999 $20,000 Amateur, 2000 $50,000 Amateur 5-6-year-old and 2000 $50,000 Amateur 4-year-old.
