Wesley Galyean, on Spots Hot, scored 219 to win the first go-round of the Futurity Non-Pro.
Special
Wesley Galyean isn't one to gaze too much into the crystal ball. His future remains uncertain, and for now, he likes it that way.

But when the non-pro competitor won the Super Bowl of cutting - the National Cutting Horse Association Futurity Open finals - in December, everything got scrambled up.

The 21-year-old Ardmore, Okla., resident won too much money to ever compete again in an Open event, unless he forgoes his Non-Pro status, something he's not planning to do just yet.

"Maybe a little later down the road," he said. "I'm at home now and I enjoy spending time on my horses. I enjoy working hard at (the sport). I'm trying to get myself where I need to be when it comes time for that."

So for now, non-pro riders will have to square off against Galyean and his champion mount, Spots Hot. The pair marked 219 on Thursday to win the first go-round of the Futurity Non-Pro at Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.

Fifty-eight horses with scores of 210 or better advanced to today's second go-round, which begins at 8 a.m.

Galyean, who will be vying for his first Augusta Futurity title in his third appearance, has no plans for this week other than just competing well. His father, Jody, is a two-time Augusta Futurity champion and is the show's all-time money winner with more than $300,000.

"I don't like to look ahead," Wesley Galyean said. "I just have to refocus for (today). If we do happen to make the finals, that's great. Then we'll refocus for the finals and give it our best shot."

Galyean and Spots Hot gave it their best shot at the NCHA Futurity in Fort Worth, Texas. The two marked 225 in the Open finals for a three-point victory and a $200,000 check. Galyean became only the third Non-Pro rider in 42 years to win the NCHA Futurity.

"There was a lot of pressure on him, on us, at the Futurity," Galyean said. "And he came through."

Because he eclipsed $50,000 in Open competition as a Non-Pro, Galyean is barred from ever competing again in the Open division until he becomes an Open rider.

So Galyean will continue to compete as a non-pro with Spots Hot, a stud by Chula Deal out of Sweet Shorty Lena. Galyean reared the horse since birth, and he said he knew the horse was special by the time it turned 2.

"God just blessed me, giving me a gift," Galyean said. "I'm just appreciative.

"Best horse I've ever stepped on. Best horse I've ever ridden."
