Augusta Futurity Parade Calls for Horses and Wagons
Hundreds of horses and wagons will be pounding down Broad Street at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27, for the official day parade of the 23rd Annual Augusta Futurity.
Everyone is invited to join the festive Western event with his or her own horses, carriages or wagons, To preserve the authentic flavor of the parade, only horses and riders and horse- or mule-drawn vehicles are permitted.
Parade participants will stage on Milledge road at Lake Olmstead (Green Jacket Stadium). Anyone wishing to participate should arrive at the staging area no later than 1:00 PM on Sunday, Jan. 27. The parade will then travel east down Broad to Seventh street, turn right on Seventh and disband in front of the Civic Center, For further information, please call 706-823-3375.
Parade participants and spectators will be admitted to the Augusta Futurity cutting competition free of charge Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 6-00 p.m. in the Civic Center. In addition to viewing the cutting horse event, visitors may shop for Western apparel, jewelry and related merchandise, see Longhorn cattle and listen to Western music.
The Augusta Futurity parade is in its eleventh year. For the first several years, cowboys participating in the cutting competition and others on horseback drove a herd of Longhorn cattle down the Broad street parade route. The popular practice was discontinued as a safety consideration for the growing numbers of both parade participants and spectators.
Previous parades have included -up to 40 horse-drawn carriages and more than 300 riders on horseback. The cutting competition itself draws up to 600 entries from the United States, Canada. and several other countries.
The Augusta Futurity, conducted by -the Atlantic Coast Cutting Horse Association, is the largest cutting event cast of the Mississippi River, and is sanctioned by the National Cutting Horse Association, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas.
